Tarawa and Makin, November 20-23, 1943
Admiral Nimitz launches his island-hopping campaign across the Pacific with the invasion of Tarawa and Makin atolls in the Gilbert Islands. The capture of these islands will enable US bombers to reach the Marshall Islands – next in line for invasion. Two thousand laborers have have turned Tarawa into a island fortress manned by Japan’s finest troops – the Imperial Marines – who, almost to a man, will fight to the death. The Americans will make many mistakes in their first true amphibious landing and suffer terrible losses. See the Flash animation for more.
