On learning of the American landing on Guadalcanal on August 7 and 8, Admiral Mikawa throws together a force of 7 cruisers and a destroyer to oppose the landing. In the middle of the night of August 9, his force slips by two American picket destroyers and mauls the American naval forces guarding the landing by sinking 4 cruisers with little damage to his own ships. But, for fear of American carrier forces, Mikawa fails to follow up his attack by assaulting the vulnerable transports. See the Flash animation for more.
