For the first time, US forces assault the Japanese homeland. The capture of Okinawa will provide the base for the invasion of the main Japanese islands. On the other side, the Japanese will use Iwo Jima as their model for defense. They will dig in and attempt to inflict massive casualties on the invading Americans. The Japanese will inflict huge damage on the American fleet through the use of waves of kamikaze pilots flying from Japan.
