The Marshall Islands

The goal of the American island-hopping strategy is to reach the Marianas Islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Guam. Once the Marianas have been taken, a strategic bombing campaign can be launched against the Japanese homeland. First the US seizes the Gilbert Islands including Tarawa and Makin Atolls (see the Tarawa and Makin animations). Next, they focus on the Marshall Islands including Kwajalein and Eniwetok Atolls. On these islands the US marines and army face tough resistance as Japanese defenders continue to fight to the death. See the Flash animation for more.
