Battle of the Philippine Sea, June 18-21, 1944  E-mail

The Marianas Turkey Shoot

The American juggernaut is moving ever closer to Japan. The Japanese carrier fleet, damaged severely at Midway, has remained dormant since mid 1943. But now, with new aircraft carriers and new planes, they seek to engage the American fleet guarding the US invasion forces on Saipan. The Japanese sail forth not knowing that the Americans have radically improved air defenses with radar, better-trained pilots, better fighter planes, and proximity flak fuses. The battle will come to known to the Americans as the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot. It marks the end of Japanese naval air power. See the Flash animation for more.Image
